The last couple days I have had sessions scheduled, but they have had to be re-scheduled for various reasons. I was itching to shoot, so I took eman in to the backyard to play around with some new lighting equipment I had recently gotten. We were having lots of fun…first we played with bubbles, then he went to the swing and played then I tortured him by making him sit in a chair.

Eventually we went to letting him use the remote to take photos of us while I played around with settings on the camera. Here is probably my fave photo of the night. I love it because not only is it lit in a cool way, but we are both really having fun together! :)

This Wedding Wednesday I would love to introduce you to a fabulous makeup artist. I met her while working at Kyoto. Someone had placed a to go order for Joncee. ”I thought it was a joke and said, I am not paying for this…I didn’t order it! ” Soon a very cute girl came in and said her name was Joncey (pronounced the same as my name John see, but spelled with a ‘y’ instead of ‘ee’). I was floored! I had never ran into someone with my name before. We got to know each other through out her visits to Kyoto and being friends on facebook. Now I am happy to share her makeup talents to you all! :)

Meet Joncey!

Tell me a little about yourself:

I am an Esthetician at Two Rivers in Eagle and love doing makeup , I have been married for almost 5 years and some of my hobbies are traveling, shopping, Disney , I am a huge Disney fan and can talk for hours about it.

Favorite Quote?

“If you can dream it , you can do it.” Walt Disney

Tell us a story from your most memorable wedding (does not have to be one you did makeup for).

Just the time I was doing my sisters makeup for her wedding it was so surreal, I will always remember that moment and how much it meant to me.
Why do you like doing Makeup for weddings?

Wedding makeups are my favorite because who doesnt like a good love story and how the couple came about to dedicate their lives to one another. So I feel privledged to be apart of that day.

What inspires you?

Disney has always had a huge impact on my life and has always inspired me to go after my dreams and pursue them and of course have a lil fun along the way. Youv’e gotta enjoy what you do and I do with both of my jobs.
Tell us a little about the work that goes into preparing a bride for her big day?

Makeup should usually be done last after hair and right before putting on the dress. If the bride needs to tan or get facials/ waxing make sure it is done at least 10-14 days prior to the wedding, the skin can react if not use to those services.

Have any planning tips for a bride?

Wedding show expos help out alot with planning, and ask other brides what they would have wished they would have done, I am sure there are brides who will tell you at least 1 or 2 things they would have done differently.
Why is Idaho a great place to get married?

It serves both great locations for outdoor weddings and lots of neat indoor venues so there are plenty of location options and its a small town but somewhat big so in the wedding planning industry everybody knows somebody who can make good reccomendations for your big day.
What should a bride look for in a Makeup Artist?

Organization, Confidence in what she is doing, experience.

Do you provide other services besides Makeup?

I do facials and Waxing as well.

Do you prefer the Bride to come to you, or to go to the Bride, and why?

It doesnt matter , whichever is easier on the bride , normally most artist charge a small fee to come to the bride but it is far less stressful on the bride to have everyone come to her .

How long to you recommend the Bride to plan for Makeup on the big day?

At least 3-6 months in advance, especially if she is getting married during wedding season, things book up fast.

What is your Favorite Wedding day makeup style?

Natural smoky brown eye and light natural pink lip.

Why is it important to hire a makeup artist as apposed to doing your own makeup on the wedding day?

The makeup artist is looking at what is going to be best for photos with the look of your makeup and again it is less stress on the big day if you can’t quite do your own makeup the way you wanted.
Do you recommend a trial run, and if so, how far in advance should the trial run take place?

YES trial runs are just as important as a rehersal wedding, also when doing trial runs dont book them on a weekend unless the artist is coming to you or has no time limit, it is a trial run so time is going to be very valuable. Trial runs should be booked at least 1 month in advance.

What has been your proudest moment so far?

Getting to do my sister’s wedding makeup was very memorable

What is the Best marriage/relationship advice you have been given?

Never go to bed angry and always have good communication

How can brides contact you?

I work at Two Rivers Salon and spa in Eagle 208-938-9060, as well as Sephora in the Boise mall.

My personal contact # is 208-860-6277

Thanks Joncey! Brides if you have any questions about makeup and what translates best in photos, leave a comment below, or contact me or Joncey. I hope this has helped you all! :)

Today I had someone picking up an order say that they are glad they ordered a big print even though her friends were teasing her about getting such a large photo. She did not care, because the photo made her happy. :) I am glad their print makesher happy… ecstatic actually! However, they ordered a 16×20…which in my mind is not a big print…let me show you why.

Before I was a photographer, I, like many of you, thought a 8×10 was a big photo. After all 8×10′s are what we should hang on the wall right? Boy was I wrong. A 8×10 is like a “postage stamp.” It’s tiny. Let me show you. (just pretend a 4 year old boy I know and love has not totally ruined the loveseat with all his chocolate milk and goldfish)

Here is an 8×10 above the Loveseat.

As you can see, it looks tiny. Totally the wrong size as a stand alone piece. If you group it with several other prints then it would be ok. Lets go up a size, here is the 11×14 above the loveseat.

The photo is still getting swallowed up by the loveseat. We need to go bigger still. What about the 16×20 my client had gotten and thought was huge…

This is still small. I have a confession for you too…this is not a 16×20, it is a 16×24! In my humble opinion a 16×20 is the SMALLEST size a stand alone photo (as in not grouped with other photos) should be. The 16×20 even groups nicely with other photos. In fact I have a collage of 2 16×20′s and 2 20×24′s hanging on my wall from my recent family session.

So the 16×20 is getting closer, lets go bigger and see what we think. The next photo I put above the Loveseat was a 20×30.

Now. I like to make a statement, and to me this 20×30 is still a little on the small side, however, I think we are headed in the right direction. If a less dramatic person wanted to hang this here, I would think it would work for them… I like a little drama on my walls though. Here is the photo I would chose to put here…

This photo is a 30×40 and, to me, it is the right size for this loveseat. It does not get lost, you can easily see it and enjoy the art you have invested in. It makes a statement and I think it looks great.

So what do you think… is a 16×20 a huge print? Whould you ever hang a 20×30 or bigger in your house?

Each portrait session I do comes with a complimentary viewing and ordering consultation. If you are confused about print sizes, just ask! :) I would be glad to help you get the proper size photos for your wall.

The fear of failure. It is something we all have to over come sometime in our lives. It is not easy to do so, but it makes us better people and it forces us to grow. When I started my photography Business the fear of failure was defiantly something I had to overcome. I still do. Everyday. It amazes me that I can turn my passion into a career. Fulltime. And make money to support my family while doing it.

Yesterday, while most of you were all enjoying mothers day, I was working 12 hours straight at a restaurant. Something I have done all 4 years I have been a mom (5 if you count the year I was 8 months preggers). I have spent Christmases, New year’s eve’s, Valentines Day’s, and countless other holidays there. I dont regret it, but I am excited to be moving on with my life. Yesterday was my last mothers day as a waitress, and the first day of the rest of my life. A life that will be spent following my passions. The feeling is bitter sweet. After 8 years of devoting my time to Kyoto, it is time to say goodbye. The people I have worked with there have become my family. I will be sad to leave, but the time has come and I could not feel more right or confidant about that. I dont know everything the future holds, but I know it will be awesome. It is time, time to overcome the fear of failure and jump in with both feet. I am now officially a full time Photographer!

Thanks Kyoto for 8 great years. I love you all and I am very glad you are in my life. I will miss you. Onward!

This photo was snapped my Wakana (who has become my sister over the years) on her cell while leaving work. I love it, so decided to use it. :)

This is an older post, but I think it is important, so I am re posting it. :)

Recently I had the privilege to go visit my Grandmother in Great Falls Montana. I learned alot form her through out my life time, but during this trip, I got to reflect on family and the stories that had been told to me through out the years. We sat down and looked through some picture albums together. She shared memories with me, of things that happened in the past, some while I was alive and some before my time. I had heard the stories a million times, but I had not seen all the photos. As I lay in bed one night, I said to Seth, “Do you realize that when we die, our grandchildren will not have the privilege of getting to “discover” who we are by photos and writings they may find in the attic, garage, basement or wherever? Instead if they want to know about us they will have to look on our computer!” To which Seth replied, “or read our facebook status history!” OUCH!!!

Take it from me, a girl who still hurts form her grandfather’s death, it is a real treat to “find” a photo of him, hold it in your hands, and have someone tell you about a part of him you never knew. It is sad to me that so many of my family photos are stored on a hard drive. I want my grandchildren to be able to experience flipping through pages of the photo album of my trip to Scotland (if I ever go that is!), and holding the photos in their hands as they make discoveries about their history. I am going to try to make it a point to print more photos of Elijah as he grows up. Part of my childhood is in a closet somewhere in my parents house, because I was born before the age of digital cameras, but eman…digital is all he will know! (though I do shoot film occasionally, It is dying out more and more.)

For any of you thinking of booking with me, let me encourage you to order the prints! The digital copy of the photos is great, but dont live your life behind a screen! Enjoy the prints while you can, decorate your house, and then when you have grandchildren, you will have something to show them besides just a hard drive!!!!!

And because all posts are better with a photo, here is a picture I took of Montana mountains, while we were driving. I rolled the window down to avoid dog nose window smears (anyone who lets there dog ride in the car knows what I am talking about!) Thats right folks, the car was still moving, because if we stopped to take a photo of everything I thought was interesting, we would never have made it home!!!

In this edition of Wedding Wednesday I want to give you all some tips on how to make your wedding day run smoother.

1. Allow extra time for hair and makeup.

Next week we are having a makeup artist featured on Wedding Wednesday, so I thought I would start my tips with a makeup tip. I have worked with some great hair and makeup artists. Though they are great, and very professional, hair and makeup usually takes longer than anticipated. As a rule, when scheduling your hair and makeup artists, add extra time to the schedule for them. You may not need it, but if you do you will be glad the extra time is there, so you are not rushing something else.

2. Have an official timeline, and a public timeline.

I dont know about you, but sometimes I feel like when I am making a plan, not everyone is on the same timeline as me. I see this to be true at weddings. Have an official timeline (the one that says when things are suppose to actually happen) and a public timeline (the one you share with your friends and family). If you want photos of the wedding party to start at 2:30 on the public timeline have them starting at 2:15 (or maybe even 2:00 if your friends typicality run late) – that way everyone has some extra time to get there, and you will be less stressed about everyone being late. Also, dont forget to allow time buffers, so if things are running late you dont need to stress about it. (if you chose me as your photog, I would love to help you with your timeline).

3. Make sure you have communicated and communicated again with your transportation.

Nothing is worse than mis-communication on the big day. If you are having a Limo or a horse and buggy or any other form of transportation, make sure you over communicate with them. Have your pickup times and locations in writing. Often times the driver is not who you made the initial arrangements with and nothing is worse than having to cut something short because of the drivers schedule, or arriving at the wrong place.

4. RELAX and have FUN!

Here is the thing. No matter how much you plan, something will happen that you did not plan for. I have shot weddings without flowers, brides without shoes, ring bearers that start talking to people in the audience. I have even shot a ceremony with out power. No matter what your wedding day throws at you, rain or shine, enjoy it! The ceremony could start and hour late, but years from now that is not what you will remember, and honestly is not worth stressing over. RELAX and have FUN, roll with the punches and enjoy the first day of the rest of your life with the love of your life! :)
